I bought this because I hoped that it would offer more depth than the first book, Deliverance. I found the first book to be extremely repetitive in its constant portrayal of alien combat. It seemed that nothing else mattered to the storyline, but just constant combat with the trife. Aaaand...I got tired of that very quickly. So I ran the risk of encountering the same boring plot in the second book, but the last few lines of Deliverance gave me hope that Deception would be different, and offer a deeper plot with twists that did not involve constant alien fight sequences.Well, it did that. I give Mr. Forbes credit, he did offer an expanded plot with different conflicts and a deeper story line, so I give him 3 stars for that. What I had an issue with is the gradual degradation of engaging, intelligent writing. I found the conversations between the characters and accompanying background story to become cheesy, almost to the point of childishness. I was ready to close the book about 60% of the way through, but forced myself to finish it, as I had spent the money, knowing full well I probably would not like it. So, I give 1 star for quality, and therefore an overall rating of 2.And if you haven’t figured it out yet, I won’t be buying any more of this series.
I think the second book in a series must be difficult to write as it is following a well received first book but must expand story, making it even more exciting but not ready to divulge the ending. Well kudos to the author as this book is great. From the first pages of on everything is a puzzle. Deception is planned almost on every page. From good guy to bad guy in a paragraph. No one knows who to believe. Confusion reigns!!! Can anything ever be normal and good again. Is this paradise? Only the next and last book can tell us. All I want for Christmas is Book three.
Wooooaw! This book was awesome! What twists and outcomes! If you love GOOD science fiction,this is THE BOOK! Fast paced,can't leave your Kindle down ( or book) . No Cliffhangers. Loved the good reading, good editing and the best. Good writing! The story continues without problem from one book to another. It doesn't " repeat" itself, like other books, occupying almost one third of the continuing story. In one word.....don't miss this out.
I thought the book was kind slow. I did not like the fact that it took so long to get things under control. I like books that move a little faster and don’t dwell on a single situation for most of the book. I think I will move on to a different book for a while. I may read the next book in the series but not right now.
Great premise in book one, and book two starts out promising. But ultimately (for me) the plot seems like a bit of a rehash and the “twists†are not surprising in the least. I think the story would have been better served by extending the tale by a book or three (which I’m sure is difficult in today’s market). Felt rushed and shallow to this reader....
I enjoyed reading this book, as much of maybe more than the first book in the series . There is hardly a full moment in the action. My only thought is it the characters had been Space Paratroopers instead of Space Marines the right would have been over before half way through the book Strike Force - Airborne ( LOL )
Not necessarily for hard science aficionados, but if you can let that go this can be an enjoyable read. Give it a go!
Book 2 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The story started strong, but had a lot of filler information that was not necessary. By this point the characters are known and the plot should have been a little better put together. I still enjoyed it and will read the next book.
