At Wit's End / 0449211843As a child, I picked up several of Erma Bombeck's books at a used bookstore and read them again and again. Picking up At Wit's End was like returning to the home of an old friend where everything is comforting and familiar, and you can laugh at old jokes together. I was delighted to see that this kindle edition retains the artwork from the paper version, all of which I remembered with fondness.Most of the essays here are still very very funny. There are times when Erma dips more deeply into sentiment for me than I want from my humor books--the deep sorrow she feels as time passes and her children age hits too close to home and I read those parts very quickly to get through them--but obviously this comes down to personal taste. There's an undercurrent here that I didn't remember from childhood of, hmm, holding men to lower standards than I'm comfortable in my current feminist life, which just shows how far we've come (yay) but made me profoundly sorry to Erma for some of the stuff she felt she had to put up with (boo). If buying this for a young person, expect to have to explain a LOT about the outdated language, the setting, and the culture it was coming from.I'm happy to have this in my collection, but it's hard to say if I'd ever read it again. Maybe I might just pull it out from time to time to give my 'old friend' a hug.~ Ana Mardoll
This book is set in the 1950's middle class suburbia and is filled with domestic humor. It is still relevant and funny today as it was when written. Women still face these same challenges even after all of the progress since this time period. A must read for all mothers and wives.
Funny never goes out of date! The situations and references tell when this was written, but the nutty stuff that every family goes through are well represented here, as only Bombeck can deliver, and are relevant today.
Very funny book by long time columnist who wrote delightful vignettes about family life.
I LOVE ALL OF ERMA BOMBECKS WARM AND HILARIOUS BOOKS I LOVED THIS HILARIOUS BOOK ALSO I LAUGHED SO HARD AND SO LOUD I FELL OFF MY BED WITH LAUGHTER SHE WAS THE GREATEST. AND FOR THOSE SNOBS WHO HATED THE BOOK YOU SHOULDN'T READ BOOKS AT ALL IF YOU'RE ALWAYS GOING TO PICK THEM APART. I MEAN WHO TOLD YOU COULD ALWAYS DO THAT TO SUCH WONDERFUL BOOKS. I LOVED THIS BOOK.
Whenever a friend is ill or in the hospital, I send them Erma Bombeck paperback books because of Erma's wonderful humor and perspective on the problems of life. I highly recommend Erma Bombeck's paperback books as a creative gift for friends who need HUMOR and a PERSPECTIVE to their problems.
I first read this book while in high school in 1967 and many times in the 1970's and '80's while raising my son. My paperback edition is buried "somewhere" with books that haven't been read in many years. Having just finished the Kindle edition, I am amazed at how much things have changed since the book was written. What struck me most was descriptions of the family dinner...something that seems lost in the over-scheduled lives of suburbanites. Although I was a "housewife" as described in the book, I can't help but wonder if that role is also something of the past. References to smoking and wanting a color TV were eye-openning for sure. Knowing that Erma Bombeck passed away more than 15 years ago is also quite sad. To think of her observations about a computer-driven, cell phone toting teenage experience would be insightful and probably quite funny. In my opinion no one in the years since her death has filled her shoes. Read the book if you loved Erma Bombeck...read the book if you want a view of a simpler time.
I purchased this book for my Amazon Kindle. Now that I am retired I have more time to read and the Kindle has been a fantastic gift from my husband and son. The book arrives almost instantly and this book like all of Erma's is very humorous. I purchased it to read during some of the gray days of winter and it really was an uplift. I read it on a trip and paused at times to read parts of the book aloud to explain why I was laughing in the car.
