I was the white guy from 'Frisco and no clue about a thing other than 17 year old Caucasion teen angst in the Army . My reading the Defender opened a vista of another culture around me all my life. From that time, July '64 until the present I will never forget the written word of Miss Payne. My pop had read San Francisco's dailies including the City's Black press....he was a white salesman in the Fillmore. This book was amazing! It was a lesson in the workings of presidential power as well as of American history here and abroad. Most of all this biography paid homage to a fearless woman who had to fight and strategize for every break she ever received and made unheard of strides in journalism. How many women journalists had Richard and Pat Nixon at their house party when he was VP while challenging President Eisenhower at every press conference?
One of the most fascinating looks at how an African-American woman in the 1930s was determined not to live her life as a housecleaner. Morris tells a masterful story that portrays Payne as a true heroine. His publisher asked how a white man could write a story about a black woman. The resistance he faced came not from his African-American sources, who wanted to tell the story, but from white people, who may have thought he couldn't connect with his subject. He does so masterfully. Eye on the Struggle and Morris' other masterful biography, Pulitzer, are bookends on my self.
Ethel Lois Payne was of her time and ahead of her time. She was witness and participant to so many of the most momentous people and events of twentieth century that it is staggering. James McGrath Morris presents her to the reader beautifully. By the time of her death I could see it coming but was nonetheless moved, saddened, and yet invigorated by her story.
I liked this book because it captured a point in history where many societal issues faced challenges. Ethel Payne met all of her challenges head on and enriched the lives of the next generation. I recommend this book to all, especially students wishing to study in the field of journalism.

This is a "Great Book" and a reflection of political history that was a pleasure to read. Ms. Payne was an amazing women that should have a prominent place in our history books.
A bird's eye view of the struggle. Payne witnessed many of the momentous events in African American history throughout her lifetime which she chronicled through her unique, focused, unrelenting style of journalism.
