I love reading memoirs or biographies about lives that have been transformed, and Leatherbound Terrorism by Chris Kratzer is definitely one of those! Chris was a conservative evangelical pastor but his soul was dying.The truth that finally set him free was in direct conflict with the conservative evangelical message. He discovered that he’d been preaching the cancer, not the cure. This book articulates both. He explains how the fundamental beliefs of conservative evangelicalism are deeply harmful. The gospel is simply unlimited, unrelenting, unapologetic, unconditional grace. Conservative evangelicalism might talk about grace, but they preach a grace with many strings attached, resulting in anything but freedom.This book pulls no punches in it’s critique of conservative evangelicalism. I’ve been a recovering evangelical for years, and I even found it hard to read at times as I felt my past and my friends under attack. Chris’ story is not my story. We all have unique stories. So even if your experience was different, try to read this book with the understanding that this is what Chris experienced. Let him have his story as you reflect on yours. And most importantly, let his message of grace penetrate your soul.This kind of grace changes everything, beginning with how we see ourselves and how we see God. I bought this book several weeks ago and have tried to write a review a million times, but it is too difficult to put into words my thoughts and feelings. This book is like coming home after a very long and tiring journey. It's falling into your own bed and being wrapped in the safety of your pillows and blankets. For once, someone is putting into words all my thoughts and feelings about today's Christianity. After all this time, I no longer feel alone in my questions or my feelings. It feels amazing to have validation for everything I have thought and felt. I cried, I laughed, I screamed Amen and I read it out loud to anyone who would listen. If you are questioning what you have been taught or you're looking for answers to some of your questions, start here. It will be uncomfortable at first, specially for the more conservative Christians, but keep an open mind. What Chris writes about makes complete sense....Grace is Brave...Be Brave...
I do consider Chris a friend and having found and read his blog i was eager to read this book! What I was not expecting is how much of Chris' life story i could directly related to in my own formation story and when I was reading about his motivations for going into ministry I was reading on the pages of his book, almost word for word my own thoughts. Chris' style of writing is VERY engaging and accessible he writes in such a way that you don't have to be a theologian to understand what he is saying and the point that he is trying to get across. I am not sure exactly on this point but it felt to me as if I could replace every period of Leatherbound Terrorism with an "amen"! This book may not check every box for everyone but it needs to be at least considered and talked about inside and outside the church! I need to live out God's Grace, I need to be brave...thank you Chris for showing me, showing us what Grace and bravery looks like!
