Gr 4-8–What stands out in this volume is the writing, which presents history as an engaging and informative story. Hollihan opens the narrative with a focus on asthmatic “Teedie.†His efforts to strengthen his body are accompanied by a list of bodybuilding activities. Following the chronology of Roosevelt's life, a positive picture emerges of the man and his family, his rise to fame, and his impact on history. Activities include making a journal, building a diorama, “hunting†with a camera, and even making a dessert based on Roosevelt's insult that McKinley had “no more backbone than a chocolate éclair.†The projects are interesting and accessible, with cautions to keep an adult nearby when necessary. Numerous black-and-white photos, insets, political cartoons, and illustrations break the text into manageable and interesting bits. A note to Roosevelt's football-player son admonishing him to not sacrifice his studies for the game sounds like any parent. But the president was able to take his concerns further when he invited representatives from Harvard, Yale, and Princeton to the White House to create a new set of rules resulting in the game as we know it today. Both useful and entertaining, this is a worthy addition to most collections.Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library© Copyright 2010. From Booklist
Part of the For Kids series, this biography combines hands-on craft activities and games (“start a penny collectionâ€; “make a campaign buttonâ€) with the life story of Theodore Roosevelt and the political history of his time. The combination does not always work: it is jarring to read a boxed section on “How to make a yummy chocolate éclair†opposite the account of the bombing of the warship Maine. And while kids may enjoy the chatty interactive tone, they likely won't have the background to fully grasp the details about political campaigning and foreign policy, which seemed aimed at a much older audience. What works best here is the lively account of Roosevelt's progressive campaigns for fair pay, restrictions on child labor, control of big business, and his pioneer role in conservation, including his efforts to save the Grand Canyon. No source notes are given for the many direct quotes, but a bibliography and list of places to visit is included. Grades 5-8. --Hazel Rochman

Theodore Roosevelt for Kids is a well-researched biography of the 26th president of the United States. The book begins with a time line of the president's life. The subsequent chapters tell the story of his life from his asthma-inflicted boyhood to his death at the age of sixty-one.Author, Kerrie Logan Hollihan, did an excellent job not only in researching the life of Theodore Roosevelt, but also in making the book an interesting read. It is definitely not a boring history book. There are plenty of photographs of the president, as well as pictures from that period in history. A fun feature for kids, is the 21 activities that are included. These are easy-to-do, and definitely related to the life and times of Theodore Roosevelt. Some of my personal favorites are making a "pigskin notebook," making a delicious dessert called "Old Insult," and making a campaigne button.Theodore Roosevelt for Kids is an excellent resource for kids and teachers who are doing research on the president. It is also an excellent book for anyone wishing to learn more about Theodore Roosevelt. I highly recommend this book for readers age nine through adult.
With a crazy kid around (ADHD, high energy, rebellious), adults can be at a loss. As a lover of presidents, I immediately equated this child with Teddy Roosevelt- "Get Action!". For a positive impactful way to spend time with your energetic and curious child, look no further than this hilarious, interesting, historically rich book of Teddy Roosevelt activities! We love the facial recognition experiement, the taxidermy/birding information, and the theme that you don't have to conform to be great... indeed, you have to be yourself.
7 year old used it for a school project. Couldn't get an easier read for her age which ultimately helped her having an outstanding final project
The book was wonderful for teaching about Theodore Roosevelt. Unfortunately I was unable to get many of the pages to appear correctly on either my Kindle Fire or my PC with the viewer. The timeline shots did not fit properly and other images also were extremely clumsy to view.
My son is a little to young but loves Teddy Roosevelt. he's 5 but by the time he 7 is will be a great workbook for him to do himselfFor now good to help him with the activities
Full of great details. Easy to read. I bought it for my 8 years old who needed it for a report - a little long and advanced so we read it together. Complete history.
This thorough and fascinating story of Theodore Roosevelt kept me turning the pages till the very end. I bought two copies for my nieces - I should have purchased a third for myself. It's a keeper!!!
Theodore Roosevelt for Kids is a comprehensive look into Teddy Roosevelt's life. It begins with "Teedie," as he was called, an asthmatic and bullied boy, and it follows his development into a charming and outgoing man who loved the outdoors and physical activity. What's fascinating about this book is that we not only learn about Teddy Roosevelt the person, we learn about the culture of the time period. For instance, it was unseemly for wealthy people to enter politics in the 1880s when Teddy was a young man. It's information like this that adds depth to the story and will help readers put Teddy's actions into the context of the times. In addition to the engaging story of Teddy Roosevelt, there are numerous photographs as well as 21 informative and fun activities, such as "Identify the Crook!" and "Make a Campaign Button."I highly recommend this book for adults as well as young readers.
