A lot of handy information. Easy and enjoyable read.
First and foremost: This is not a travel guide, per se, but a remarkable, comprehensive source of insight about the land, the culture, and how to thrive there. It will set you up for a successful and enjoyable trip, whether you plan to be there a week or a year. That said: It's also a great read. It's friendly and approachable. You can start on page one and read on, or use it like a resource and find the info you need. Get details on how to plan, what to explore, where to go, where to live.Better still: The book includes several fascinating profiles of people who have made the move to Costa Rica. They share their experiences and advice. I've never seen anything like that in any other guide book. Finally: You can tell the author knows and loves Costa Rica and wants to share the best parts. It's like getting an insider's perspective from a great friend.
There is so much crap online about living in Costa Rica and most of it is unresearched, incomplete, and in many cases biased information. The author of this book has obviously had the experience of traversing a new country for the purpose of living, not just visiting. I've lived in Costa Rica for 7 years and I still get the updated versions of this book to refer to. You get what you pay for with this gem.
I regularly buy Moon guides for their consistent top-notch, reliable information, and this guide to living in Costa Rica is no exception. This book has all the details needed for a move to Costa Rica ranging from the big picture (what the people and culture are like, what different parts of the country offer for living) to the nitty-gritty (immigration, how to rent / buy or build a house / how to find a job).I especially liked that this book has profiles of people who have made the move - it's like having the chance to have a cup of coffee with someone who has already made the leap to Costa Rica.
I don’t know if there are more guide and travel books written about Costa Rica than other parts of the world, though I would not be surprised if there were. Why wouldn’t there be! After all, Costa Rica consistently sits at the top of world rankings on the happiness scale. If there were no other categories (and there are), this one would be enough.Could it possibly be true? Really, the happiest? The short answer is a resounding “Yes!†and Erin Van Rheenen’s new edition of her Living Abroad in Costa Rica is the superior guide to making sense of why this is true and—best of all—how to make it a possibility in your life.I now have a decade+ of living in this green jewel of a country. Yet this has not been enough time to have discovered and know everything about Costa Rica that Erin has written about.Erin’s book is not just about how to make the move here from where ever you might happen to be: it is about how to really live in Costa Rica once you get here. Her experiences and deep insights justify keeping Living Abroad in Costa Rica as your perpetual vade mecum. What ever you do, you need the right equipment. You would not go on a pilgrimage without a stout staff, nor birding without binoculars, nor snorkeling without flippers, nor, most importantly, choosing a place to live without an experienced guide and trusted friend at your side. This book is your best choice.Erin’s book is essential equipment for living an adventure you will scarcely believe was possible. I cannot praise her work highly enough. The book is meticulously organized and thorough. Along with her insights and sparkling wit, Erin’s clear writing makes the book just perfect.
I highly recommend this book if you’re thinking about moving to Costa Rica. It’s full of detailed, practical information and it’s a good read. I appreciate that the author, Erin Van Rheenen, presents the pros and cons of living there. I especially liked reading the Ex-pat profiles. (I flipped through the book looking for them the way I look for the comics in the New Yorker. I just wish they were listed in the index so they would be easier to find.) The profiles are a great way to see how very different people have made their lives there. There is so much to think about when preparing to make such a big move, and this new edition of Living Abroad Costa Rica lays out everything I need to know! Thank you, Erin Van Rheenen.
If you've ever dreamed of moving abroad like I have, but the prospect is so daunting that you don't even know where to start, this is the book for you. My husband and I honeymooned in Costa Rica many moons ago and we both fell in love with the wonderful country. One day, perhaps we will retire there. This guide takes the guesswork out of the complications (and joys!) of moving to Costa Rica. It covers everything from immigration and visas to the cost of living, banking, the search for housing (including buying or building property) and, if you have kids, the details of moving with children and even pets. If you're moving to Costa Rica, or even considering it one day, this book should be on your must-read list.
Von Rheenan's book is simply the best book out there on living in Costa Rica. Her coverage of every aspect of living here is encyclopedic -- I can't think of a question she hasn't answered. I moved to Costa Rica in 1990, and so much of what I experienced in moving to another country she covers with incredible sensitivity. Her understanding of the culture reflects the true traveler's delight in opening doors into other ways of experiencing the world. And her personal style make this an eminently readable book. I wish it had been available in 1990! But the fact that this book has gone through five editions is testament to its enduring value. Bravo!
