This is one of the best books regarding Insects, namely predator ones, whether:1) true Predator insects:a) generalists -not picky carnivore, preys on lots or all other insects.b) specific -likes only specific insects, also a carnivore, to prey on other insects.or2) Parasitoids(example: parasitic wasp lays egg in an aphid, larvae hatch as parasites to use the aphid as food/shelter which grows a new wasp).This book totally brings it together and you will probably find yourself gardening not for yourself but for these fascinating creatures that do the heavy lifting of taking care of insects that bite/chew, suck, or eat your garden's plants.Author seems fascinated by slug sex!
"Attracting Beneficial Bugs to Your Garden" is an excellent book. I quickly read it cover-to-cover and found it well-written, easy to read and useful. Ms. Walliser covers small gardens to farmers, giving appropriate techniques for all, including insectary borders, interplanting, beetle bumps and more. I learned a great deal in this book and plan to put it to use in my garden. In addition, the photos are great. They help to identify the good bugs. Thank you, Ms. Walliser, for a good read and a lot of useful information.
I bought this book as part of my preparation to start a fully organic farm in Suriname (humid tropics) where nobody believes that it is possible to do this and live off the farm. I read the book in one long sitting, couldn't stop, every page was another 'aha experience'. Because this book, which is about 'insectary planting' (what a concept!), provided the missing link in my approach and provided the balance between my obsession with soil life and growing a healthy and strong plant on the one hand, and the importance of working with the above ground ecosystem to support this healthy and strong plant. Another myth that I will try to bust over here, because of this book, is that beneficial insects can only be introduced in closed systems like a greenhouse (based on examples from Holland), and not in an open field in the tropics. It's going to be a challenge since we have no agriculture research here, but I will do the research on the farm and develop our own locally adapted knowledge. Ms Walliser has done a great job explaining a complex subject for the lay person without sacrificing the science behind her approach.
I've spent a lifetime enjoying the "wild side." I love this book for laying out, step by step, what's great about this or that beneficial, how to use their expertise, and how to attract, keep, and hopefully see again next year. I've been an "organic gardener" for roughly 50 years. I love that this added to my knowledge.
This book is a must read for any serious gardener. It contains fascinating information on the complex relationship between plants and insects and gives a whole new dimension to gardening. I no longer choose plants just for aesthetics, but to serve as part of an amazing little ecosystem. The object of the game is to use flowers to attract natural predators of garden pests -- to achieve not only an aesthetically pleasing garden but one that manages its own pest control! Also the book is entertainingly written and has great pictures. Fantastic!
Excellent book, fantastic resource, and compelling case for planting insectary borders to entice beneficial insects into your yard. Add to that the fact that it's fun to read and you've got a five-star book I'd recommend to anyone interested in improving the health of their garden.
Love this book. I'm a huge fan of understanding the hidden garden world. I find the information on Herbivore Induced Plant Volatiles (semiochemical) fascinating. I've been an organic gardener for several years using products like Captain Jack spinosad and Seranade (fungicide). After reading this book, I am going 'no spray' next vegetable garden season. I have to wonder how much interference I've caused in plant communication by using sprays and drenches. I'm ready to let mother nature do her stuff.Highly recommend this book.
So much knowledge provided in this book. It will take time to learn the good from the bad but all are welcome in my garden.
